Handmade Unicorn Spinner Card – My Greeting Box

This card is another of the unicorn designs from the February My Greeting Card box! (Click here to see another one I made.)

I really liked the look of this card because it has a moving element. I also wanted to make my mother a card for Mother’s Day, and this was the perfect opportunity.

Here are all the bits and pieces I needed. Those are actually my own scissors, though another pair was included with the very first box back in November. But everything else (except for my large craft mat) is from My Greeting Box.

I love the acrylic stamps! Isn’t that unicorn adorable? Cutting out the oval shape freehand was easier than I thought, and I was pleased to get the right size first time.

There were coloured pens (and the acrylic stamp block) included with the November box but my beloved daughter has swiped them. So I used my precious fineliners that my daughter is not allowed to touch! I also thought I’d colour the feet and ears with my gold pen, just for fun, which looks really cute! Other than that I more or less copied the colours on the instruction sheet.

Then it was time to put together the spinning part, using double sided tape (awesome stuff) and the thread included…

Doesn’t that look cool?

OK, once I finished playing with the spinning unicorn, it was time to put together the frame.

More stamping, the sentiment (slightly smudged, not my best work) and the little lavender stars around the frame. At first I thought the ink didn’t work because I couldn’t see it on the stamp, but it came out just fine on the lilac card.

Now to add the little diamante sparkles. I used tweezers, though it’s actually very easy just to use your fingers.

That little bottle of glue has a very fine nozzle, which is perfect for putting a tiny dot of glue on the diamante.

Cutting out the pink backing card was nice, because for once absolute precision wasn’t required! The circle had to be larger than the frame, but didn’t have to look pretty as it wasn’t going to be seen.

Of course I still had some trouble with precision. Turned out I’d cut the pink card too small, so it couldn’t be seen behind the lilac frame.

See? On the left is the first one I did, clearly too small. So I did it over (right) and it worked better.

Then finally, putting all the pieces together. Lots more double sided tape and layering everything up.

And there it is! Isn’t it just gorgeous? I can’t believe I managed to make something so effective!

Every time I make a card I learn something new. This time I definitely learned to measure and cut more carefully! Also I need to be very careful when stamping, because the acrylic stamps can smudge quite easily.

The instructions, as always, are excellent, lots of detail and very easy to follow. It’s also so satisfying creating something that looks so professional! And what a beautiful and thoughtful thing to give.

I’ve always admired those handmade cards you see at craft fairs, but now I know that – with a lot of help! – I can actually make them myself! This is such a nice way to spend a bit of creative and therapeutic time, and it would also make a lovely gift for a crafty friend. I also think this box would also be a fantastic gift for a creative teenager.

Oh, and I did give this card to my mother for Mother’s Day. She is the most un-unicorn person imaginable, but she absolutely loved it! I’m pretty sure that’s because I made it, but it certainly demonstrates that you can convince anyone with something handmade!
