Review: Your Sommelier Festive Wines

Christmas is a season for lovely food and wine.

Your Sommelier Discover French Wine  subscription sends you three delicious bottles of wine every month straight from France.

This month they have produced a selection of three festive French wines that are perfect for Christmas Day.

The bottles are well packaged and delivered right to your door.

Enclosed with the wine are tasting cards, one per bottle, plus a card outlining the theme.

This month we have a red, a white, and a bottle of bubbles.

First, the bubbles, which should always be a part of Christmas Day!

Touraine Brut 2015 Château de Quinçay

It’s described as light and refreshing with white fruit and floral notes. It works equally well as an aperitif or with dessert.

The question is, do you drink it with canapés or save it for the Christmas pudding?

Douceur de Fruit 2016 Mas de Saint Croix

This fruity red will go perfectly with Christmas dinner. Tasting notes recommend it as balanced and light on the tannins.

If you can’t wait until Christmas Day, the notes also say it will go very well with sausage and mash!

Chardonnay 2017 Domaine de la Grande Coutarde

Not everyone enjoys red wine, so here is a white which goes equally well with your roast turkey.

You may notice that I’ve managed to photograph the wrong card with this wine. Damn, I can’t believe I didn’t notice that!

This is a pale golden wine, zesty and fruity. It has almost no oak, and a good amount of flowers and fruit. It will go equally well with poultry or fish dishes.

The one I’m looking forward to the most is the brut, because I adore sparkling wine. Now, you might think that this is French wine so why no champagne. However champagne is just sparkling wine made in a specific region, and while it has name cachet (and frequently a higher price!), there’s nothing fundamentally superior about champagne generally.

I’m also excited about the red, because it’s described as fruity, and I love fruity red. The October Your Sommelier box had two delightful reds, so if this one is anything like those, it’ll be marvellous.

Usually my reviews are written after I’ve drunk the wine, but in this case I’m saving them for my own Christmas! While I haven’t tried them yet, I’ve always found Your Sommelier selections to be excellent, so I’m confident these will be no different.

This selection definitely has something for everyone. No matter what you are eating this festive season, these wines will complement your Christmas dishes.

Joyeux Noël!
