Wine is delicious and I love to drink it, though I admit I know very little about it. Your Sommelier is a terrific way to learn about wine, and of course to drink it at the same time!
This is the Discovery Box, £36 per month including postage. The box arrives via courier, and is extremely well packed. You get three bottles in each box, from a different region in France each month.
This month’s wines are from the South West of France. Two reds and a white.
Also included are information cards, with tasting notes and food pairings for each bottle. These can be collected in the binder you receive with your first box.
Time for a little drinkie.
I love red wine in the winter! Château Saint Benazit 2012 was rich and deep with quite a lot of tannin. It smelled incredibly earthy and dry, and though it did have a slightly dry feeling on the palate, it was saved by a reasonable amount of fruit.
The Château de Caillau 2014 is a wonderful full-bodied wine. It needed a good hour after opening the bottle, especially as it was a little cold. Once it warmed up it had an incredibly rich and fruity flavour, which became more prominent the second day after opening. I actually preferred it the next evening, when all that fruitiness really came to the fore.
The sediment was quite thick, which I only noticed after I had gotten a mouthful at the end of the bottle!
Despite my preference for red in cold weather, this UBY Colombard Ugni Blanc 2015 was actually my favourite!
The only drawback with this wine was the cork. It was made of plastic, and was so difficult to remove it actually broke my beloved waiter’s friend! Fortunately I was able to borrow my mother’s lever-arm corkscrew, which finally got the damn thing out. I found that the surface of the cork was very rubbery, which undoubtedly created a great deal more friction between cork and bottle than intended.
Anyway, once I actually got it into the glass, it had an incredibly fruity, almost sharp smell. The taste has some sweetness but with that lovely sharp edge giving it depth and complexity. The overtones were very much of citrus, which made it incredibly refreshing and lively. Lovely lovely.
I would very much like to drink this outdoors on a warm sunny day!
I enjoyed all the wines in this box. Left to myself in the supermarket I’ll go for New World wines or perhaps Rioja, so it’s lovely to have a change. The reds were probably a little heavier than I’m used to drinking, but their fruitiness made them much easier to drink than I expected.
As for the white, yum. That was truly gorgeous, and I’m only sorry I don’t have more to save for the summer!
