The February My Greeting Box had three lovely unicorn designs! I already made two of them (here and here) and as my best friend’s birthday was coming up it was a great opportunity to make the third card in the set.
The sentiment ‘wishing you a magical day’ was absolutely perfect for a birthday card.
The first thing to do was to make the background design on the lilac card. This involved lightly drawing diagonal lines, then stamping over the top of them with alternating heart and flower stamps. I used the little squares on my craft mat as a guide to the diagonal lines.
The lavender ink looks lovely on the page, but it’s impossible to see on the stamp itself! The first time I used it I thought the inkpad had dried out because it wasn’t visible. But it’s a lovely soft purply-pink colour on the paper.
Stamping and colouring, my favourite! I used my lovely fineliners for the coloured parts, using the illustration as a guide. I also decided to break out the gold pen for the hooves and horn.
Cutting out the stamped picture is always fiddly, but then it just needed to be stuck to the circle of purple glitter paper. Conveniently, there was a circle template provided in the box. Just as well, as I haven’t used a pair of compasses since school! Then measuring and cutting the pink card, and stamping the sentiment.
Finally, all I did was erase the pencil lines on the background, stick the paper pieces on, and add a few little gems. It was all ready to be stuck on to a card blank. I used foam tape for the circle to give it a bit of a 3D effect, and the sentiment was regular double sided tape.
Then I got overconfident…
Yep, I stuck it on the card upside down. Eeeek!
Fortunately I hadn’t pressed down too hard, so it wasn’t impossible to remove. I managed not to tear the decorative card, though the card blank was a total write-off. You can see where the tape had pulled off some of the surface of the decorative card. However the edges were still intact, and there was no visible damage from the front.
So I reapplied some more tape, found another card blank, and made damn sure it was the right way up before I actually applied it!
Phew!
Well, this one was certainly an adventure! It was actually the simplest and quickest of the three unicorn cards, which is probably why I got so careless at the end.
Fortunately there was no real harm done, and the finished card looked terrific! It’s also very nice to know that the My Greeting Box kits always include spare card blanks. This is ideally so you can make more of your own cards, but in this case it’s so idiots like me can screw up and still be able to complete the card!
You’ll be glad to know that my lovely best friend liked this card very much, despite (like my mother) not being a unicorn person!
Making these cards is very satisfying. The instructions are clear, you have everything you need provided in the box, and the finished designs look incredibly impressive. It’s a great pleasure to make something lovely to give away, and it’s also a remarkably therapeutic process. Anyone who has crafty and creative ambitions but doesn’t quite know how to start would get a tremendous amount from My Greeting Box. You also learn and use different techniques for different sets of cards.
I always learn something every time I make a card, and my lesson this time was to be a bit more bloody careful!
