I’ve seen some awesome franchises being trailed for October’s LootCrate, including Stranger Things (OMG SEASON 2!) and Buffy, so I’m super-excited about this box! The theme is MYTHICAL, which sounds extremely promising.
As a reminder, here’s the blurb:
LootCrate is a monthly box full of geeky awesomeness. As well as their classic original Loot Crate they have several other box types, including boxes for pets, gaming, anime, and wearables!
I’m reviewing their original box, the Loot Crate, which contains 4 – 5 items each month, including exclusive and licensed items, with a value of at least $45.
They have four subscription levels:
- 1 month – £24 p/m
- 3 months – £22 p/m
- 6 months – £21 p/m
- 12 months – £21 p/m plus a bonus t-shirt
- All crates include a t-shirt; you select your size when you order your subscription.
OK, let’s check it out.
It’s a biggish box this month. Not that you can tell without anything for scale, but take my word for it.
Yep, looking good.
So there’s this month’s T-shirt, this fantastic Ghostbusters Logo T-shirt with neon 80s colours!
Talk about bright! This is awesome, I love it.
This is the second figure collaboration between PhatMojo and LootCrate.
It comes in pieces to be assembled (geddit?)
It’s Thor vs Loki!
It’s quite a small figure, about three inches high. The style is similar to the Alien/Bishop figure in last month’s box.
More on this figure later.
Did/do you love Buffy the Vampire Slayer? I certainly did. Still an amazing show in my opinion, even it’s it’s a tad dated fashion- and tech-wise now.
Anyway, her trusty stake Mr Pointy has been transformed into this cool bookmark.
It’s made from poplar wood, and is a LootCrate exclusive.
OK, this is a biggie for this month. It’s from Stranger Things, and if you’re any kind of geek you’ll be going nuts over the prospect of Season Two.
Three separate pieces nicely packaged.
Snap ’em together and you get…
Eleven vs Demogorgon!
That iconic scene at the end of Season One where she’s attempting to defeat the Demogorgon.
Look at the pain in her face! <sob>
This is absolutely cracking.
This month’s Loot Pin shows, appropriately enough for the month of Halloween, Dracula!
I really like the style of this one, old Vlad looks seriously scary.
Let’s have a quick look at this month’s menu booklet.
Also this month’s crate transformation.
It turns into Thor’s Hammer, Mjolnir.
Another nice easy one!
So, value first.
Loot Crate claims that each box contains at least $45 (about £35) worth of goodies. Most if not all items are Loot Crate exclusive, so it’s difficult to assign a commercial value. However I can sort of find equivalents and guesstimate, though I don’t use eBay as I find their prices are not a useful guide to value. I’ll also add my thoughts as I go along.
T-shirt – geeky t-shirts usually retail around £10.
Marvel Mini Figure: this is a Loot Crate exclusive, and I can’t find an equivalent. PhatMojo are kind of hard to price, so I’ll be generous and put it at £10. It’s a pretty small figure so I think that’s a fair value*.
*I’m pricing it the same as the one in last month’s box, but see my thoughts further down.
Buffy bookmark: laser cut bookmarks vary wildly in price, and of course this is an exclusive item. I’m going to put it at £5.
Stranger Things Model: OK, this is really tricky because I can’t find anything remotely similar. The style reminds me a little of Funko, though it’s a scene rather than a figure, so I’m going to say £15.
Pin – again, total exclusive, but comic pins are around £5.
Total: £45
Plenty of bang for your buck there!
OK, now my thoughts. I’m going to get the moans out of the way first.
I’m not at all impressed with the PhatMojo figure. First of all, the scene seems generic. Last month’s figure showed an iconic and familiar moment from Aliens, which was amazing. This one doesn’t show much except just Loki and Thor fighting. Meh.
Another problem with this figure is that it’s not at all well made. The separate pieces do not fit together well, and I had a nightmare making the heads stay on long enough to get a picture.
Finally, the paintwork is really shoddy.
Anyway, on to the rest.
The bookmark is fun and cute, but realistically it’s a bit thick to be used as a real bookmark. It’s very likely it would tear the pages of a regular book; the cardboard it was displayed on looked a bit worse for wear already! But it doesn’t really matter, this is much more of a fun novelty item than something really practical. And it is pretty cool!
I love the t-shirt. It’s a neat idea to give this iconic 80s logo a cool 80s design twist.
The pin is great, pleasingly dark.
And OMG, the Stranger Things scene! I absolutely bloody love it. One of the best things in a LootCrate ever. (OK, there was that Rick figure from July’s box…)
So despite my grumbles about the Marvel figure, this is overall a splendid box!
And finally, Little C modelling the t-shirt and the crate transformation:
What do you think of this month’s box? Let me know in the comments!
Oh, and if you’d like to see the unboxing video, here it is!
