Handmade Monster Shaker Card – My Greeting Box

The April My Greeting Box went into outer space to meet some monsters! My lovely husband Big C’s birthday was right at the end of the month, so I thought a monster-themed card would be perfect. (I should make clear that he is in no way a monster. He is in fact an awesome husband and I love him very much.)

One reason I wanted make this card was that I was dying to try out the silver inkpad! Of course I forgot to include it in this picture of the various bits I was using for the card. Oh well, you’ll see it later.

Cutting out is usually the first thing to do, and this time was cutting out a piece of black card and piece of vellum. This would form the part of the card with the monsters on.

Acrylic stamps are brilliant, and these monster stamps are so cute! You can see here I actually ended up making two versions of the stamped vellum. The first one (on the left) wasn’t quite stamped correctly – you can see the monster on the left is missing part of his arm.

Colouring in is always fun, and I used a mixture of Sharpie for the bigger shapes and fineliners for the details. I also more or less went with the colours shown on the front of the leaflet.

I also managed to smudge the stamp ink on one of the pictures while I was colouring it in, so ended up with just this one. It was the one with the missing arm, but I used the fine black pen from the January box to fill it in. It turned out looking OK!

Now was the time to make the little pocket. The vellum was folded around the black card piece, and taped down on three sides. Then I poured some of the tiny glitter stars inside, and sealed it all up. The packet was stuck onto a piece of silver card at an angle, then the whole thing stuck on a blank black card.

Finally I got to use the silver ink! It worked beautifully, though I was nervous about putting it in the wrong place. It also felt surprisingly sticky, which I suppose it would have to be for metallic rather than coloured pigment. Anyway, it showed up beautifully against the black card.

Looks pretty cool, huh?

I like the comical theme of these space monster cards, I think they would be especially good for children.

As always, the process of making a card was terrific fun. The instructions were very clear, and any mistakes were entirely down to my own carelessness!

Crafting subscription boxes are very popular now, and I really think My Greeting Box is one of the better ones. You get the satisfaction of making something both lovely and useful, then you get the pleasure of giving it to a friend or loved one and making them happy! I reckon this is a win-win.

Oh, and Big C liked his birthday card very much!
